3 Tips to Increase Reading At Home

Reading is a great way to make sure your child stays entertained and interested in learning. However, sometimes the challenge is getting them to read. There are many ways you can encourage your child to read at home including:

1. Invite Them to Make up Their Own Stories

Making up stories can be fun and exciting for children. Allowing children to make up their own stories also teaches them about new ideas and story structure. If children love the idea of playing pretend, they will be more engaged in the books they are reading at home. Try asking your child to make up a character and go on an adventure together.

2. Read With Them

Reading with your child is a great way to spend time together. It can also teach them new vocabulary and get them interested in a series or character. Try reading to your child once a week and see how it encourages them to pick up more books in between!

3.  Provide Them With Choice

Sometimes, a child thinks they don’t like reading but really they don’t like the book in front of them. Providing children with choice allows them to find stories that interest them. Try taking them to the library and asking them to choose a book that seems right for them. If it’s too challenging, read it together. If they choose a book that seems too easy, encourage them to read it to a younger sibling. Soon, they will choose books that are right for them.

At The End of The Day…

Kids need to have a habit of reading so it doesn’t become a chore, but rather something they want to do. They need to be read to as children and parents should try to give their kids the opportunity to also read themselves, even if they are only just starting out.

In order for children to have a healthy relationship with reading, it is critical that parents or other significant adults read with them as often as possible and that they find ways for the child to read on their own.
